You’re not you when you have a low sugar

I’m not sure where to start with this but I’ve been meaning to write something on this topic. Before I begin – have you seen the Snickers Super Bowl commercial with Betty White? The tag line is, you’re not you when you’re hungry. I agree. You’re not you when your sugar is low.
It’s a primitive response. When your glucose reserves are running low you’re unable to tap your ‘higher’ cognitive functions. This includes decision making and problem solving – two tasks that come to the aid of a low sugar.
Here’s where events of hypoglycemia can become dicey. I have the kind of family that loves to ask questions. When I walk-into the kitchen with a blank look on my face – often times somebody sees me. And the first question, invariably, is “Allie? Are you low?” The response is as rhetorical as the question. Next question, of course there is a follow-up question, is “what do you want ME to get you?”
Let’s revisit the ‘higher’ functions depleted during a low sugar – decision making and problem solving. For this reason I have a ‘stash’ of fruit leathers in my nightstand, hard candies in my desk drawer and apple juice in the fridge. I try to evade any Q&A sessions that might ensue during a low. Otherwise I become like Mr. T (see the other Snickers commercial.)
Don’t get me wrong! I love my family and I’m lucky to have people around me that want to help. However – you’re not you when you have a low sugar. To prevent the historical lows I’ve had that could easily contend for an Emmy – I try to do what I can do when I have the clear-and-present mental faculties to plan for a low.
What’s your plan of action for a low?
