Letter from the Editor: FDA vs. EU, Scale Weights

If you think that the U.S. House and Senate are on two totally different paths on spending, taxes and deficit management, they don’t even come close to the vastly different paths that the FDA and the European Union are taking. It appears that the EU has decided that diabetes is a real epidemic and is willing to approve medications and devices to address this problem which is just the opposite of what our FDA appears to be doing.
Over the past months the EU has approved the Medtronic MiniMed external physiological insulin delivery (ePID) system, the Animas Vibe (combining their pump with a Dexcom CGM), Bydureon was approved last month, and now VeraLight, Inc. has received CE mark approval to sell Scout DS. The new-generation, noninvasive diabetes screening test employs fluorescence spectroscopy to scan patients’ forearms in 60 seconds for advanced glycation end products. One wonders if the FDA will adopt the same attitude.
This week Sheri Colberg, PhD shares her feelings on how often our patients get frustrated when they don’t appear to be losing weight. This week’s feature, Don’t Let Your Scale Weight Get You Down, is a must read and a great handout for your patients.
